Irish Proclamation 2016
Irish men, women, children, new Irish and Irish people who have emigrated:
We salute all that has been achieved since 1916. In the last 100 years Ireland has grown into a nation that can stand tall, proud and free amongst the independent nations of the world. We have achieved a lot this last century but we are not perfect and we will now work as a united country to achieve the following for all our citizens:
We declare the right of every Irish person to be treated equally – no matter their country of origin.
We declare the right of every Irish person to a home.
We pledge to keep Ireland a peaceful nation and to help other nations, where possible, to resolve conflicts.
We pledge to protect our rural communities and to provide all the services necessary for their survival.
We pledge to take better care of our environment. We will reduce our use of fossil fuels and increase our use of renewable energy. We will strive to eliminate all forms of pollution.
We will welcome and take care of refugees forced to leave their home countries.
We pledge to nurture and care for our culture – our language, music, song, dance, literature and sport – a special gift given to us by previous generations and ours to hand on to future generations.
We believe that with dedication, respect and with the help of all Irish people our hopes and dreams can be realised. We call on every Irish person, whether at home or abroad, to stand proudly behind the Irish flag and work towards a better Ireland for all her people.

School Self-Evaluation: Numeracy
You may recall receiving a questionnaire earlier this year on the Teaching and Learning that takes place in our school in the area of Numeracy. This questionnaire was part of a wider school self-evaluation process that was begun two years ago with Literacy and which will continue over the next number of years. This process of school self-evaluation is a mandatory part of a Department of Education and Skills led initiative.
For the school year 2014-2015 we examined the area of Numeracy and outlined below is a summary of the findings.
If you should wish to discuss any part of this process or if you require further details please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Summary of School Self-Evaluation Findings in the area of Numeracy
Our school has strengths in the following areas with regard to Numeracy:

- A very positive attitude to Numeracy amongst the pupils
- The vast majority of parents are happy with how their children are progressing in the area of Numeracy
- Teachers are using a wide variety of teaching methodologies
- A wide variety of resources, including ICT, available to each teacher
- A wide variety of assessment tools are used
The following areas are prioritised for improvement:
- Problem solving
- Maths Strand: Measures
And this is how you can help:
- Check and sign your child’s maths copy at least once per week – if you have any concerns then make an appointment to see your child’s teacher
- Help your child develop their “Maths Eyes” – please visit the website haveyougotmathseyes.com
- If necessary help your child with their Maths homework but don’t do it for them
- Help them to apply “School Maths” to real life situations e.g. cooking, shopping, timetables, sharing equally, keeping score in games, playing cards etc.

4th December 2013: Some brief points to note re: Christmas Concert next Monday and Tuesday nights:
- All children should be in Kilbarron Hall by 6.30 pm.
- The concert will begin at 7.00 pm sharp and will finish at approximately 9.15 pm.
- On the night you are not attending the concert you can collect your child/children from the hall after the concert at 9.15 pm – there are some tickets left for any parent who may wish to attend both nights.
- We would appreciate it very much if parents would not come into the back stage area before or during the concert unless you have been asked to do so by a teacher.
- Every child will be responsible for his/her own belongings and they should not bring any valuables on the night.
- There will not be an admission charge on the night. However, as there quite a number of costs associated with staging the concerts, we will most gratefully accept any donation that you may wish to make. For this purpose there will be a “bucket” at the door on the night and all donations can be placed here.
- School will not commence until 10.30 am on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The bus will not collect the children for this later time. However the school will be open from the normal time for those parents who wish to drop their children in and also the bus will run at the normal time.
- If anyone wishes to donate a prize for the raffle it would be very much appreciated. Prizes can be dropped into the school at any time up to next Tuesday.
20th June 2013:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It’s hard to believe we’re at the end of another school year and the parents association would like to keep everyone up-to-date with what has been happening on the fundraising front.
This has been our most successful year of fundraising and we are delighted to be able to contribute significantly to the building work taking place in the old school over the summer. This is due largely to the success of our cookery demonstration night with Neven Maguire which took place in February. As a result we raised just over €9,000, most of which will be given to complete the works taking place.
We also had a bag-pack in October which raised €950, the calendar brought in €600 and finally, the clothes collection raised €600. This money has been used to pay for the dancing and generously supplemented the swimming and the tennis which we hope will continue in the coming years.
The clothes collection proved to be very successful and as such, we will have another collection later in the year. We would ask everyone to continue collecting clothes and there is storage space available in the school if anyone would like to drop in bags when we are back to school in September. As soon as we have the next collection date we will let everyone know.
Finally, as the year comes to a close we would like to thank all the pupils and their families for their help and contribution over the past year. We would like to acknowledge the continued support we receive from the teachers and staff of our school.
We wish the present sixth class the very best of luck as they move on to pastures new and we hope everyone enjoys a lovely summer.
Yours Sincerely,
Carmel Fox
On behalf of Kilbarron N.S. Parents Association
14th June 2013: Today we officially raised our second Green Flag awarded for work done over the last 2 years on the theme of Energy while maintaining our efforts with regard to Litter & Waste. The flag was officially raised by two members of our Green Schools committee – Kevin Boyle from 5th Class and Amy O’Sullivan from 2nd Class. Afterwards all the pupils had a party in the school hall. Well done to everybody for all the work done and now we are getting ready to begin working on the next theme, Water, from next September.
6th June 2013: As we approach the end of another school year, on behalf of all the staff of Kilbarron N.S. I would like to thank you most sincerely for all your help and support this past year. I wish to pay tribute to our Parents Association who have worked incredibly hard and who have done so much this past year and, in particular, to congratulate them on the tremendous success of the Neven Maguire fundraising event.
During the summer months the three classrooms in the old school building will be internally insulated in an effort to deal with the cold and damp problems that we have there. The Department of Education have refused to provide any financial assistance. The Board of Management has been planning to deal with this issue for a number of years and as such has been putting money aside annually. However due to cutbacks in recent budgets, in particular the scrapping of the Minor Works grant to primary schools, the project would not have been possible without the financial support of the Parents Association. They are donating most of the funds raised from the Neven McGuire Cookery Demonstration to the project. On behalf of the Board of Management, staff and pupils I wish to sincerely thank them for the work they do for our school. I also wish to acknowledge the huge amount of work Andrew Warren has put into this project. This is the second time in the last few years that Andrew has donated his professional services to the school. As a school community we continue to be hugely indebted to him.
We will be officially raising our new Green Flag, awarded for continued work on the theme of Litter & Waste with the addition of the Energy theme for the past 2 years, on Friday 14th June at 1.00pm. If you have the time, you are more than welcome to come along. We plan to have a party for the children in the school hall afterwards and would very much appreciate any donations of buns, cake, biscuits etc. that you might like to make. Any confectionary can be left into the school on the day.
Our end of year school mass will take place in the school hall on Thursday 20th June at 10.00am. Again you are more than welcome to come along if you wish.
You will receive your child’s end of year school report over the next week or so. If there is anything in the report that is of concern to you, then you should make contact with your child’s class teacher before the end of the school year to discuss the matter.
The school will close on Friday 21st June at 12.00pm for the summer holidays. The bus will not bring the children home at this time. We will re-open on Wednesday 28th August for the new school year.

We had a Book Table Quiz which was won by Kate Fox, Eva Burke, Laura Cleary and John O’Dwyer. Along with many other things we read joke books, newspaper and magazine articles, comics, brochures, board game instructions, recipes and even the the back of cereal boxes! We made book marks, book covers, comic strips. We wrote poems and made up crosswords and Book Quizes. We wrote some dialogue and watched the news. And finally today we all dressed up as a character from a book. Everybody made a huge effort and we have a sample of the characters below.
29th May 2013: Our Parents Association is holding a clothes collection on Wednesday 5th June. We would love contributions of clothes and other items such as shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linen, household textiles, stuffed toys etc. to be dropped to the big hall in Kilbarron on the evening of Tuesday 4th June between 6pm and 9pm or on Wednesday morning from 8.30 am to 10.30am. We would be delighted if you would spread the word to other family and neighbours as all are welcome to bring old unwanted items – any condition as long as they are clean!! All money received from the clothes collection will go directly to the Parents Association to fund activities for the children.
27th May 2013: Ms. Haugh, Agnes, Oisin and Eva travelled to the Hotel Kilkenny in Kilkenny today to receive the Green Flag for Energy on behalf of the school community. Well done to everyone for all the hard work over the last two years and in September we will start working towards our third flag which is the one for Water.

19th May 2013: The pupils of 6th class from Kilbarron N.S. and Terryglass N.S. made their Confirmation at a lovely ceremony in Kilbarron Church today. Sincere thanks to all who helped out in any way to help make the ceremony such a special occasion for the children. 2nd May 2013: For the first time the school entered a team into the Cumann na mBunscol camogie competition. Our first qualifying blitz was today and the girls did very well with super wins over Gurtagarry N.S. and Ballinaclough N.S. in their first two games. However in the final game of the blitz, following a tremendous game of camogie, the girls were narrowly beaten by only 2 points by Ballinree N.S. We wish the girls from Ballinree N.S. every success in the County Semi-Final blitz. We are also very proud of our own girls! Well done to the panel of: Laura Leenane, Rachel Hannigan, Aoibheann O’Meara, Roisin Fox, Aine Slattery, Sarah Leenane, Ciara Slattery, Thyra Burke, Mikaela Sage, Aoife O’Sullivan, Kate Fox, Niamh Slattery and Eva Burke.

25th April 2013: The schools soccer team took part in the FAI’s national 5-a-side primary schools soccer tournament this week. We entered two teams in the competition which took place in St. Kevin’s FC, Two Mile Borris. Both teams did very well on the first day of the competition. Our A team were just narrowly beaten in their final game to knock them out of the tournament while the B team made it through to the second day. The B team did very well on day 2 of the tournament making it all the way to the county final where they were beaten on a scoreline of 3-0 by Ballyneale NS – the same school that beat us in the County Football final in 2011! Naturally the team was very disappointed. However it was still a tremendous achievement to reach the final considering that 73 teams from over 50 schools started out in the competition. The panel was: Marcus Esmonde, Michael Slattery, Adam Slattery, Conal Moran, Ray O’Meara, John O’Meara, Michael Carroll, Oisin Mcmahon, Cian O’Meara, Kieran Clarke, Aoibheann O’Meara and Kevin Boyle.
24th April 2013: Congratulations to Conal Moran on his second call back to the Cumann na mBunscol Primary Games hurling trials today. Best of luck Conal.
The schools U13 team impressively made up for their loss in the first game of the season by beating Birdhill N.S. in a super game of hurling in Kilcolman today. Well done to the team! We must now wait, and hope, that Birdhill N.S. can beat Toomevara N.S. in their next match to bring us back into the competition. Fingers crossed!!

26th February 2013: Congratulations to our very hard-working Parents Association on an incredibly successful fund raising event in the Abbey Court Hotel this evening. Neven Maguire’s Cookery demonstration was a novel idea and certainly captured the imagination. The event was a complete sell-out and raised a lot of badly needed funds for the school. So well done to Carmel Fox and all the rest of the Parents Association.
22nd February 2013: Our 5th and 6th class boys participated in an indoor hurling blitz in Nenagh today. They played games against Portroe NS, Newtown NS and Carrig NS and got on very well in all three matches. well done lads!

The U11 team now progress to the County Final which will take place on Friday 1st March in the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh. We wish them the best of luck and know that they will represent our school with distinction.
4th February 2013: The school got good news today when we were informed by An Taisce that our application for the renewal of our Green Flag has been successful. All the pupils of the school have been working very hard on the Energy theme for the past two years. Well done in particular to our Green Schools Committee who have been leading the project very successfully since we started our Green Schools journey 5 years ago. Four representatives from the Committee will be presented with a new green flag for our school on a date yet to be finalised in May. Well done to all!!!
13th November 2012:
Kilbarron N.S. Finally Gets to Savour the Sweet Taste of Success
Having lost county hurling finals in 2010 and 2011, and a county football final in 2011, Kilbarron finally landed the first county title in the history of the school with a hard-fought victory over Anacarthy N.S. in the Section G final in the Ragg last Thursday.
Anacarthy opened the scoring with a point. Kilbarron’s Kevin Boyle responded with a point and two more followed from Conal Moran. Anacarthy dominated play for the next ten minutes but the Kilbarron defence of Marcus Esmonde and John O’ Meara held firm and, with the help of the crossbar and a well-struck penalty back off the post, held Anacarthy to just three points in this period. Now Kilbarron were to take over and they dominated play for the final five minutes and, with two superb goals and a point from captain Adam Slattery and a point from Conal Moran, were in the lead at half time on a score line of 2-4 to 0-4.
Anacarthy were first out of the blocks again in the second half with a quick point. However this would prove to be their final score of the game as Kilbarron took over and dominated until the final whistle. Adam Slattery played the captain’s role well scoring another two goals and two points. Conal Moran helped himself to a goal and another point and Michael Slattery scored a goal and three points. John O’Meara added two more points to leave the final score: Kilbarron N.S. 6-12, Anacarthy N.S. 0-5. It was a great team performance with every player giving their all.

For the second year in succession our school football team has reached the county final following a hard-fought win over Ballinree NS in the North Final yesterday. We are hoping that we can go one step further this year and bring home some silverware!

- In future no pupils will be brought to matches/other activities as supporters, unless they are brought and supervised by their own parents.
- If the school reaches a county final the Board will subsidise a bus to bring supporters to the game. A teacher will accompany the children at all times.
- Team members should normally be brought to matches by their own parents/guardians. Where this is not possible their parents/guardians must send a signed note to school allowing them to be transported to the game in the car of another parent or a teacher’s car.
- The Board advises all parents transporting children, other than their own, to school activities to check with their insurance company that they are covered for said activity.

Finally I would like to remind all Parents/Guardians of the procedures that are in place for collecting your children at school finishing time:
i. Junior and Senior Infants should be collected from their classroom at 2.00pm
ii. All other pupils, except those going home on the bus, should be collected from the school gate at 3.00pm. Please note that due to the large volume of traffic that builds up around the gate at this time, children are not permitted to cross the road on their own and will be asked to wait inside the gate until collected. The teacher at the gate at home time is there to supervise those children boarding the bus and cannot be expected to ensure all other pupils cross the road safely. This procedure is in place for the safety of your children and we would respectfully request your support in this matter.
iii. Any pupil who is leaving early, for whatever reason, must be collected from their classroom by a parent/guardian or other nominated adult – the request to leave early should be written into the pupil’s Homework Diary.

Margaret O’Brien baked a big cake that had the Green Flag on it. Lauren Mulvihill and Louise Kennedy made a speech. Everyones parents were standing around watching the Green flag being raised. When we were finished, we went into the hall and we all got a bag of crisps and a drink. Then all the children went back to their classrooms and ate what they had. All the Mothers came into the classrooms and gave us more food like buns and cakes. I was absolutely stuffed!! Then we went outside because there were three bouncy castles to play on. One for the Juniors, another for 2nd and 3rd classes and one for 4th, 5th and 6th classes. Some of the past pupils came as well. Gerardine Wisdom did face paints. I had a great day!!!!

Cumann na mBunscol County Final 14th June 2011
On the 14th of June 2011 Kilbarron played Ayle in the County final. It was a nice day that was perfect for hurling. The game started at 10 past 2 and the 2 teams settled in very quickly.
Ayle got the first score and were up by three points. Kilbarron quickly equalised with a goal by Stephen Burke and then a point from Conal Moran to take us into the lead by a point. The half time score was4-1 to 1-2.
Willie Lennox gave us a talk at half time as sir was with his child in the hospital. Then we went out at the second half with a bit of momentum. Ayle got 5 goals in the second half with Kilbarron scoring 3 goals. After a while Michael Slattery came out of goals and James O’Sullivan went in. James O Sullivan pulled off some great saves and only conceded 1-2.
The final score was Ayle 9-5 and Kilbarron 4-6 .I think we lost as we didn’t play well and gave up near the end. The starting team was Michael Slattery, James O’Sullivan, Andrew Lennox, Stephen Burke, Jack Dunne, Bethany Slattery, John O’Meara and Conal Moran.
Match report by Andrew Lennox 6th Class
8th June 2011: The County Final will be played in Semple Stadium on Tuesday 14th June at 2.10pm. The opposition will be Ayle N.S.
7th June 2011: As I am sure you are no doubt aware by now that, after a lot of hard work by your children over the past two years, the school has won its first Green Flag. The flag was presented to 4 members of our Green Schools Committee at a presentation ceremony in Thomond Park on 20th May. We now plan to have an official flag raising ceremony, and party for the children afterwards, on Friday 17th June, after our end of year school mass. You are more than welcome to come along on the day and join in the celebrations.
The mass will be at 11.30 am, for those that may wish to attend, with the flag being officially raised for the first time by two children from the Green Schools Committee at approx. 12.15 pm. There will be a cup of tea/coffee afterwards with a few light bites. All children will be allowed home at 2.00 pm. The bus will not bring the children home at this earlier time.
Any donations of buns, cakes etc. would be most gratefully accepted and can be dropped into the school on the Friday morning. Also if any parent wishes to help out in any way it would be equally appreciated. If you do wish to volunteer please make contact with any member of our Parents Council, or myself.

8th March 2011: Pride of place this week must go to our Under 11 quiz team who, last night, won the County Final of the Primary Schools Credit Union Quiz and will now go on to the All-Ireland final in the RDS, Dublin on the 3rd April. This was a fantastic achievement for the team and just reward for the huge amount of work they have put in for the last few weeks. The members of the team are: Cathal O’Meara (Team Captain) and James O’Sullivan from 5th Class, and Mia Foley and Conal Moran from 4th Class. The school community is very proud of them and we wish them every success in Dublin next month.
7th March 2011: As you may be aware Cillian Dunne, from Kilbarron, will this Easter travel to Dubai as part of the Irish Paralympic athletics team to participate in the World Championships. Cillian is a past pupil of Kilbarron N.S., having only left us for Borrisokane C.C. last June. He visited the school last Friday and spoke to the pupils about the world championships and about the competitions that he will participate in.
We have decided to have a “no uniform” day next Friday, 11th March, in support of Cillian and all proceeds raised will be donated to the Dunne family to put towards the costs involved in travelling to Dubai. On that day all donations will be most gratefully accepted and can be placed in the box that will be on a table at the main door.
Your support for Cillian would be very much appreciated and we wish him and his team all the very best and every success in Dubai next month.

10th Jan 2011: The Department of Education and Science have advised our school that certain practices/procedures must be put in place that can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses including the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu).
These practices/procedures include the following:
- Respiratory Etiquette: When coughing or sneezing all pupils should cover their mouth with a tissue. The tissue should be used only once and disposed of immediately. If no tissue is available pupils should cough or sneeze into the inside of their elbow. In so far as possible you should ensure that your child has a supply of tissues each day for school.
- Hand Hygiene: When washing their hands pupils should do so with soap and water for a period of at least 20 seconds. Under Department guidelines hand drying facilities in the school may no longer be shared between pupils. Parents should ensure that each child has their own small towel in school (a face cloth would be most suitable). The pupils will store the towel in their schoolbag and bring it with them to the basin/sink when they wish to wash their hands.
- Pupils who show any of the symptoms of the flu should be kept at home and if a pupil becomes ill while at school a parent/guardian most come to collect them immediately. To this end, please ensure that the school has your most up to date contact numbers. The symptoms include the following:
- Sudden onset of symptoms
- High fever – temp. over 38 degrees C/100.4 degrees F
- Severe weakness and fatigue
- Dry cough
- Aching muscles and joints
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Runny nose
- Vomiting/diarrhoea
16th Dec. 2010: As you are probably aware by now we have introduced a system of contacting parents/guardians by text message in emergency situations. This has proved particularly useful over the last couple of weeks, and, listening to the weather forecast, may do so again over the coming week. If you have not been receiving the text alerts please contact the school immediately so any problem that may exist with your mobile phone contact details can be rectified. During periods of inclement weather you will only be contacted if the school is closed outside of previously notified closures or if the bus is unable to travel i.e. if you do not receive a text alert then the school will be open as normal. Please note that you cannot reply to these text alerts.
Agnes, our part-time school secretary, works at the school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. Please note that, should you wish to contact the school outside of these times, the phone will not be answered during class periods – you should instead ring before 9.20 am, at small break between 11.20 and 11.30 am, lunch between 1.00 pm and 1.30 pm or after 3.00 pm.
Over the years you have been most generous at Christmas time in showing your appreciation for the teachers in our school. However, in light of peoples changed economic circumstances, the staff would most respectfully request that the pupils do not bring gifts to school for their teacher. Instead the pupils, if they so wish, can show their appreciation and good wishes for their teacher with a Christmas card – a homemade one being particularly welcome.
Finally the school will close for the Christmas holidays next Thursday, 23rd December at 12.00 pm. The bus will not bring the children home at this time.
On behalf of all the teachers of the school I would like to wish you all a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

We won the toss and played with the wind in the first half. We played very well and were winning at half time. In the second half we played against the wind but we played better than the first half. Burgess used the wind very well but our defence was well on top. As the game went on we were more in control and we showed some great teamwork. We got some great scores as we passed the ball through the Burgess defenders to get some great scores.

Kilbarron N.S. Vs Silvermines N.S.
On Friday the 14th of May Kilbarron played Silvermines in a schools hurling match. The first half was played mostly in the Silvermines half but their full back had a good half and cleared most of the ball. Scoring was low in the first half. About ten minutes from the break John O’Meara almost got Kilbarron’s first goal but it just went wide of the target. Kilbarron lead at the break, 3 points to 1 point.
But the Mines came flying from the traps and got an early goal. Then Conal Moran changed things with a goal. Stephen Burke replaced John O’Meara. The match tipped Kilbarron’s way when Sam Warren and Tom Fox scored two goals in quick succession. Stephen Burke got a fourth goal for Kilbarron. Points from subs Sean Hogan, Emmet Moran and Stephen Burke sealed the game. Sam Warren with a piece of magic scored his second with a cheeky flick. The game ended with a score of Kilbarron 5 goals 6 points, Silvermines 1 goal 2 points.
