Drift Fest

On Saturday two weeks ago I went to drift fest in Tyna Co. Galway. There were two fields full of cars, jeeps and 4×4 jeeps. In the track there was a jeep to pull out the cars that got stuck. It only had a cab and no back. There was a 206 97 had a keg in the back and used it as a speaker. There was also an Audi A4 full of speakers all in the back. There were around 65 cars in total and they all had to pay around 200 euro to get in and drift. Then at three o clock the pros went drifting for points. Then after the pros were gone the other people went around the track clockwise direction. A pink emo began burning rubber every time it turned. Then a beamer crashed into another car and lost its front bumper. When it got put back on the man crashed into the tyres and he could not get out. The red jeep or the one with no back came and got it out. Then we had to go home on the way home we went to see a couple of 4x4s

Kilbarron N.S. V s. Burgess N.S.

On the 28th April 2012 we played Burgess in an under 13 schools hurling match. It was our first match. It was in the McDonagh Park in Nenagh and the referee was Dan D’Arcy.  Our captain was James O’Sullivan. It started at 1.00pm.

It started off fairly equally but we soon got a goal and a point to put us ahead. Burgess however were not giving up and got a good goal leaving us only a point ahead. They got another fantastic goal putting them ahead by two points. We all played our socks off until the half time whistle but we were still down by two points.

We went back out and won the throw in. We all doubled our efforts but to no avail. With five minutes to go we were losing by two points. We got an absolutely fantastic goal to put us ahead by one point. To make sure of the win we scored two more points before the final whistle.

The final score was 2-5 to 2-2. After the game we shook hands with the other team. We didn’t get back to school until 2.30pm.

We are playing Toomevara N.S. this Friday. I am confident that we will win even though they are a very good team. Wish us luck!!!!!

My Birthday Party

For my birthday party on the 5th of May, Ciara, Róisín, Sian, Mom, Dad and I are going to Crack Pots in Nenagh. Chantelle was supposed to come but she is going to a cousin’s confirmation.

Crack Pots is a pottery place in Nenagh that lets you pick a piece of pottery that you want to paint and paint it any colour that you want.

We are staying in Crack Pots until half past one and then we are going to go get a LuLus.

Later on we are going to go down to the Derg. Ciara has already decided what she wants to eat. She wants a steak and a pint of milk.

We are going to bring my birthday cake into the Derg and eat it there. My birthday cake is going to be a secret that only my Mom and I know about.

Hopefully afterwards we are going to back home to my house for an hour so that we can mess about for a while.

I know it will be a great day no matter what the weather is like. But I think that we are all hoping for it to be sunny.

My Confirmation!!!

On the 29th of April 2012, I had my Confirmation. It was in Kilbarron Church at 11:00am.

I took Jennifer as my Confirmation name, as I had liked it for a long time. I don’t know why though!! I wore a beautiful dress. It was navy and light cream stripes and it had little red dots. My friends also had beautiful dresses as well as the Terryglass girls.

Before mass, mam and dad took pictures of me! I was kinda tired so they didn’t take much but I wouldn’t have mind because I was excited!!!

In mass, I was the first of the candidates to read. I wasn’t nervous…I was excited!!! I also had to shake the Bishops hand and bring up the bread with my mam. She brought up the wine.

After mass, we all walked out to the grotto, but it was too windy so we came back in. Everyone took lots of photos and there were so many, you didn’t know which one to smile at!!! It was funny!!

I went home and got lots more pictures with family, friends and Cyrella Quinlan who was my sponsor.

We had a bouncy castle and it was HUGE!!!! I had a great day and I will never, ever forget it.

NT u12 cup final

On the 29th  of April Nenagh AFC  played against Ballymackey in the  north tipp cup final .it was windy ,mild day and the pitch wasn’t in brilliant condition either. When the match started both teams found it hard to keep the ball on the ground. In the second half Nenagh started to find their rhythm with shots from Bryan Mychlotney and Steven kirwan, but the best shot came from Ballymackey player Kevin McCarty which was just tiped over the bar by the Nenagh goalie Stephan Loughnane . it then went into extra time and with Nenagh pushing for the goal they finally got the break through with a fine strike from Bryan Mchoghlin the  seal the deal. Nenagh‘s captain Jack Daly   lifted the cup . CMON NENAGH!!!!!The team is as follows

Steven, Dara, Jack, Conal, Daniel, Michael, Bryan, Steven, Diarmud.

My Confirmation Day

My Confirmation Day was on the 29th of April in 2012. My family and my relations came to my Confirmation. It was on in Kilbarron Church at 11 o clock.

The mass lasted for an hour and a half. I had to say a pray of the faithful and bring up a gift to the alter. We took a lot of pictures in the church as well.

Next my family, relations and my brother Anthony’s girlfriend went to the Tach Cottage for a meal. For my dinner I had turkey, ham and veg with potatoes. For dessert I had a chocolate brownie. Chantelle came with us.

After that we went outside and took loads of pictures with my family and relations. We didn’t stay outside to long because it was very windy and very cold.

After that we went back inside and sat around a table and had a very long chat to everyone.

Chantelle stayed the night at my house. We took my dog Rusty for a walk. Next we locked up the hens and ducks and we had to carry up one duck because she is lame. We also had to give food and water to a sick hen.

After that we played the Wii for a long time and watched the TV. We went to bed at 12 o clock and didn’t fall asleep till half past two because my hamster Snowy was on his wheel and he was making a lot of noise.

My Confirmation!!!!!!!

On the 29th of April 2012,I made my confirmation along with all my friends in 6th class, in Kilbarron and Terryglass. It was in Kilbarron church at 11 a.m.

I got to the church a bit late and I was the last person to arrive, but there is a saying “last but not least!”

Bishop Kieran O’Reilly said the mass along with Fr. Michael. There were about six servers.

I said the 1st reading, Terryglass girls sang the psalm and Tégan said the 2nd reading. The psalm was “Do not be Afraid”

After mass, all my family, cousins and family friends came to our house where there was a marque, obstacle course and a load of food. There was chicken curry, rice, chicken nuggets, sausages, onion rings, spring rolls, mushroom things, chips and a load of salads.

Jackie O’Sullivan made a cake and there was a dove, a cross, flowers and writing on it. For dessert there was also fruit salad, meringue, cream, cake, jelly and ice-cream.

All my cousins went on the obstacle course and we played blind mans bluff.

I had a great day, but the sad thing is……….I will never make my confirmation again!!!!!

The Cookbook Launch

On Thursday, just the day before we got our holidays, our school launched the cookbook ‘Our Favourite Recipes.’

Everyone in the school had brought in a recipe and the Parents Council-with the help of Kathy Slattery put it together. Even the teachers had given in recipes. Some of the pupils’ recipes included: Liam’s Raw Carrots by Liam O’Dwyer, Foleys Flapjacks by Sian Foley and Emma’s No-Bake-Quickie-Cookies by Emma Boyle.

On the day we all went in to the hall and sat down on the rows of benches. There were lots of other people there too. Some of the people from the Parents Association were standing at a table that held buns, cakes and biscuits. Others were selling cookbooks.

Peter Ward got up and gave a speech. He had given a fore word to the cookbook. When he sat down my mother got up and gave a speech. A múinteoir Connolly got up as well. Not many people were listening- they were all focusing on the food at the table.

Afterwards we went back to the class. People came in with food. The cookbooks were a great hit. We all had a great time.

Two weeks ago I went to my Grandpa’s house. It was great fun. In school we are making paper maché volcanoes and green school posters and the winner gets a surprise. Our dad is making a pond and a hen house in our garden and I can’t wait until they are finished. James McDermott.

Oisín, Cian and Aoibheann are on the under 11 quiz team and they have a quiz competition next Monday in Borrisokane. We are going to play hurling with Terryglass School. Last Thursday Oisín and I had a soccer match in Nenagh and we lost 4-2. The Government are very mean at the moment as they are trying to make our school a 2 teacher school. There is a big meeting in the Ragg next week to try and make our school stay a 3 teacher school. Kevin Boyle

In the past week we found out who would be representing Kilbarron in the Credit Union Quiz. This year Aoibheann, Cian, Marcus and I are on the under 11 team and Cathal, Mia, Kyle and Roisín are the U-13 team. The first quiz will be in Borrisokane on the 3rd of February at 8 o’clock and if we win that we will go to the county final and if we win we will go to the All-Ireland. Come on Kilbarron. Oisín McMahon

On the 14th of January my family and I travelled to Dublin to the BT Young Scientist exhibition. It was the 12th year of the exhibition. Over 3,800 pupils participated. There were six local schools taking part in the exhibition. They were from Borrisokane, Roscrea and Thurles. Borrisokane C.C. tested the arguments that are used to promote or prevent the use of curse words. They used surveys and experiments. There were many different activities that even You! could take part in. Such as: making a rubix cube, cycling a bike to generate electricity, phone recording in a telephone box and listening back to your own voice in different tones, which were in the analogue devices’ stand. They also had optical illusions and balancing experiments which were very interesting. There were three girls modelling clothes made from milk cartons, magazines and feathers. They were really cool. There were also primary exhibitors too. They had projects on recycling, how sand travels, gardening and health. MAYBE we might take part next year??? Ciara Slattery

One of my favourite things to do at the weekend is to go horse riding. I go to Birr Equestrian centre. My favourite horse there is a horse called Anthony. He is grey and white. He is around 15 hands high. He is a really good jumper and has lots of fun when my friends and I go out galloping through the fields. There are over 100 horses in the stable, including, race horses, show jumpers and hunters. I love the jumping classes, especially when I’m on Anthony as when we are going over the high jumps it is as if we are flying. But my absolute favourite thing is when we go trekking which is where we go out for over 5 hours straight in the fields and just gallop and jump to our hearts content. I can’t wait to go again on Saturday. Mia Foley.

On Friday the 3rd of February our school entered an indoor hurling blitz in the complex in Nenagh. We went to the blitz by cars. Mr Connolly was our Manager/Teacher. In our first game we played Carrig N.S. We beat Carrig 6-2. After that we played Portroe. We beat them 12-1. We played Silvermines school next. We beat them 9-1. In our last game we played Burgess school and beat them 3-1. Scorers were James 17; Cathal and Adam 3. We won the blitz but it doesn’t matter who wins. We all had a great time. Conal Moran

Sixth Class

Last Monday I went to the farm machinery show in Cavan. When we were going we went into Breffni Park. The pitch was very wet. Then we got to the show we looked at the compressor and generators. Then we looked at the machine stand. There was raffle for a John Deere vintage tractor and I entered in but I haven’t won yet. My favourite stand was the New Holland stand. It had huge tractors and machinery. After we had our dinner, I had fish and chips. It was like a dinner at home. Then I bought my John Deere jacket. It was a great day. I hope I will go next year. Christmas at Our House

We always put up our decorations in early December.  As the days pass by Blaithnaid gets more and more excited.  Christmas eve’ finally comes she starts bouncing around the house like a chipmunk on steroids. On Christmas day we get up at around 5 o’clock and dive under the tree for presents. At 1 o’clock we eat our dinner which our mam has been up cooking all night and half of the day. At 11 o’ clock all of us go in to see my dad and little sister Kyla. On Christmas night one of us goes and stays with my dad. On St Stephen’s day we finish off the turkey and ham. Then we visit our cousins in Toomevara. During our holidays we visit our granny in the Ragg. My birthday is on the 7th of January and we usually go back to school on my birthday but this year we’re not going back until the 9th. At the end of the holidays I usually go into my dad for a few days. Unfortunately everything has to end and we have to go back to school.

I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Vincent usually wakes us all up at 7 or 8 o clock. Maybe even earlier!

We’d go down stairs and go into the kitchen to look at our stockings. Then we’d go into the sitting room and open our presents. We play with them till maybe 10 o clock but then we have to have breakfast and get ready for mass. Sometimes I serve for Christmas Day mass. After mass we’d talk and maybe I’d go over to Trixie’s to see what she got for Christmas, and then we go home.

Me and Vincent would go and play with our toys again. Mam cooks our Christmas dinner, while I set the table with our Christmas table cloth, napkins, and knife’s and forks. I love the smell of Christmas dinner. Then Nanny and Sean come down for dinner. We gobble it all up!!

Then we have desert. It’s usually jelly and ice-cream, brownies. Then my aunt Debra comes up with my Uncle Tom and my two cousins Tommy and Emma. We play games, talk, and drink, eat, watch aDVD, and watch TV, listen to music, then about 8 o clock, everyone goes home. Mam and Dad clean up and then they relax for the rest of the evening.

Me and Vincent try out our new games again. Then sometimes we might all watch a Christmas DVD and then around 11 o clock we’d go to bed.

I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!

On Christmas Eve my Mam and Dad prepare the stuffing for the turkey. They get the desserts ready. My Mam heats up a pot of mulled wine. Christmas night we light a red candle to let Mary and Joseph know that they are welcome to stay here. On Christmas morning I get up and open all my presents. Then I eat my breakfast and get dressed. Then my family go to mass. Sometimes I serve and Father Michael gives the servers a selection box. When we come home my Mam and Dad prepare the dinner.  Sometimes we go to my Aunts house for Christmas.  My Aunt Mary and my Uncle Seamus come over for Christmas.  We play the Wii and have a game of cards and draughts. Brendan and I play chess. Brendan, Dad and I are the only ones who like playing chess. After dinner we go for a walk and when we come back we wash up and dry up. We have sweets and pies etc. We watch D.V.Ds and movies. We have lunch as well.  We say good night to my Aunt and Uncle and they go home. Then we turn off the Christmas lights and go to bed. Then Mary and Seamus come back again St Stephens Day and finish the turkey.

By James O’Sullivan

Every Christmas everyone from my family eats Christmas dinner at my house. But Barry Lorraine Leomie and Pat and the kids go home soon after eating their dinner. This year Christmas is on a Sunday. Shops are never open on Christmas day. There are never cars on the road on Christmas day because most people are at home with their families. We always go to mass on Christmas Eve. Last Christmas our water froze it did not thaw out until the week after. Everyone loves putting up the decorations. Every Christmas we drive around in the car to see lights at houses. Sometimes we go up to Lorraine’s for Christmas dinner. We never go to Barry’s for Christmas dinner because there is not enough room in his house. When all our visitors have left we pull the Christmas crackers. It is a lot quieter when they are gone. I get to play with my toys when they are gone. I always go to bed at twelve.

On nearly every Christmas morning I get up at 6 in the morning. I get dressed quickly but I have to do it quietly because if my sister wakes up that early in the morning she would be very grumpy.  When I am down in the living room I sort out all the presents and put them in piles. I open my presents and play with them. After that I have my breakfast and get ready for mass. Every Christmas we go to mass on Christmas’ eve and on Christmas morning. I let out my hens and give them food. Then we have something small to eat. After lunch I write my thank you cards. In the evening time we have a big dinner. After dinner I watch a movie with my dad. I go to bed at 1 o’clock in the morning. The next morning I have a good sleep in I sometimes stay in bed until it is 1 o’clock. I sometimes miss lunch. Merry Christmas everyone

In our house at Christmas we get up to all different sorts of things. We normally have visitors over for Christmas but this year it is just Mom, Dad, Sian and I.  Every Christmas we put up our tree and decorations. Mom usually puts the lights on the tree. Sian and I put up all of the other decorations. Dad puts the star on the top of the Christmas tree. For Christmas dinner Mom prepares the turkey by slow roasting it over night on Christmas Eve so that it is ready to serve on Christmas day. On Christmas day we run down the stairs to see if Santa Claus came. We rip open all of our presents and if we have any selection boxes we eat them all up. Later on we have Christmas dinner. We all love Christmas in my house. It is the best time of the year.

Oh I really can’t wait to see,

But at the end of the day

We’ll have to say

Happy Birthday Jesus

Before Christianity it was a time for remembering the dead, and it marked the beginning of winter.  It was a frightening night, when people believed evil spirits and ghosts came to haunt them and witches cast their spells.  People light big bonfires and cut faces in turnips to frighten off evil spirits. People hid their faces and dressed in funny clothes to keep the fairies from recognising and snatching them.  They went in groups to be safe.  They shouted ‘Trick Or Treat’ at the doors of the houses.  The Jack o’ Lantern, (the carved out pumpkin with a lit candle placed inside) is actually an Irish tradition based on the legend of Jack who made a pact with the devil. By Orla Shanahan and Stephen Burke.

The Irish Fleabane A few weeks ago a scientist from Trinity College Dublin came to our school to talk to us about an endangered plant, the Irish Fleabane.  This is a large yellow flower like a daisy.  One of the few places it grows is on the banks of Lough Derg.  It likes marshy land.  This type of land is perfect for some plants and animals. If we don’t protect these habitats, plants like the Irish Fleabane will disappear. Many people will have seen this flower but may not have known its name or that it was  endangered. The Scientist asked us to make posters to let other people known about the Irish Fleabane.  We will send these to Trinity and she will choose the best one. By Rosie Donnellan

Midnight Mayhen

The witches and goblins lay far ahead,

As well as the others that used to be dead.

Darkness creeps across the sky.

As tiny twinkling stars dance by.

Footsteps echo through the silent night,

Whilst the moon sheds a silvery light.

When midnight arrives, nothings as it seems,

Yet it’s still just a typical Halloween.

Schools Cross country  On the 27th of September 18 pupils from Kilbarron school travelled to Thurles to the schools cross country Championships.  The day was wet and windy so we all brought our rain gear.  When we arrived the place was packed with buses and cars.  We were in the small schools category. We were all a bit nervous. First we warmed up. Then the 3rd and 4th class girls ran.  I came first and our team of Emer, Mary and Jenny finished second in the team event. Next the 3rd and 4th class boys ran and they did great. My sister Emma came third in the 5th and 6th class race and the others did brilliantly.  The 5th and 6ht class boys also ran very well.  We all got soaked but had a brilliant day. Sport

Football, hurling soccer too,

Every kind of sport I like to do

When I’m playing sport I feel great.

Sitting at home watching t.v I hate.

I love to score goals and points,

And when I score I fell like a giant.

When I play soccer I meet my friends

I love sports and that’s the end.

My Halloween Fright  One night at Halloween I heard a tapping on my window.  I looked out the window and came face to face with a witch. I opened the window, “come on little girl” she said, “I need some help and you look like the type of person that can help me.”  She took me to her hiding place. “Now I can finally finish my stew” I was going to go into the pot, when I woke up.  “Just a dream, Just a dream” I said. By Leanne Kitson

Giselle  Last Sunday night, I went to a Ballet called “Giselle” in The Source Theatre in Thurles. The story was about a girl called Giselle who fell in love with a Prince but he was already engaged to a Princess. Giselle became very upset and died suddenly- however she came back to life and danced a beautiful dance.

The costumes were very pretty and the dancing was brilliant.  The lights on the stage were very dramatic. The theatre is lovely and it has a beautiful balcony. I am looking forward to going back to the theatre to see Pinocchio at Christmas time.  By Louise Kennedy.

Halloween

When Halloween night comes round,

Witches, wizard and devils can be found.

Bonfires, fireworks, bangers all,

Who can say no the eerie call?

So dress up quickly, run onto the streets,

From house to house, in search of treats.

And when the nights comes to an end,

Be sure to give back the clothes that you lend.

BOOK REVIEW – “UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE”

“Under The Hawthorn Tree” is a heart-warming story about three brave children travelling across Ireland during the Famine. Eily is a twelve year old girl who loves her sister, Peggy and her brother Michael , as much as any mother could . Michael is a brave , strong boy , who tries his very best to keep his two sisters safe. Peggy is a scared little girl who only has her brother and sister to take care of her . This book is a brilliant story and helps children understand what life was like during the Famine when there was hardly any food in Ireland . This book is followed by two further stories called “ The Wildflower Girl “ and “Fields Of  Home .” I would give the book 10 out of 10 and if you like stories about times gone by, then this is the book for you !

A Match to Remember

The Kilbarron National School Gaelic football team set off for the Nenagh playing field on the thirteenth of October. It was a nice Autumn day and the weather was thankfully dry. Our drivers were: Kevin Connolly, Lisa Mulvehil, Mary Burke and Grainne O’ Sullivan. They got us there in good time and we went straight to the changing rooms. There was lots of excitement and a few nerves as we togged out for the match. We peeped out through the door and we could see the very big team of Ballinree, our opponents. We jogged out onto the pitch, not letting on that we were intimidated by their size. The whistle went and the match was on. Despite the efforts made by the Kilbarron team the ball ended up in the back of our net within 1 minute. Unfortunately this happened many times in the first half, eight times to be precise. The first half wasn’t going our way. At half time however Mr. Connolly gave us a pep talk that fired us up. We returned to the pitch ready for the next half. We were pleased to discover that the Ballinree team was so exhausted by their efforts in the first half that most of them had been replaced by the girls on the sideline. We got off to a great start and in no time at all we found the back of the Ballinree net – six times no less! But time was against us and we didn’t manage a victory. We left the pitch, our heads held high. It was great crack and hey, we still got into the losers final!

My Success in the Proctor and Gamble Art Competition

Hello, my name is Olivia Carroll. I am in fifth class in Kilbarron national school. About a month ago my teacher Mr.Connolly told my classroom that an art competition was taking place and we all had to enter a healthy eating poster. The following day I got at work to make my poster to the best of my ability. About a week later, after entering my poster, to my surprise Mr. Connolly walked into the classroom and told me that I was one of the winners of the art competition! I was shocked yet thrilled. My award was that my picture would be placed on the Procter and Gamble 2006 calendar. I also won a huge art set with window markers, coloured paper, a make up set, detective markers, gel pens and lots of other cool things. And that is my story of fame in an art competition. And I am honoured.

 My Favourite Author

My favourite Author is Jacqueline Wilson. She was born in Bath in 1945 but she spent most of her life in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey. She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first novel when she was just nine years old. She started work as a journalist on the Jackie magazine which was named after her which my mam used to read as a young girl. Since then she has been writing children’s fiction book son a full time basis. She is the most borrowed Author of all children’s author from my local library. She is a keen reader herself and has a collection of many thousands of books. She has one grown up daughter. I like her style of writing because she has an amusing and funny way of writing about the problems of children. Her books are easy to read and I like her characters and sometimes I can recognise myself in them. I also like the illustrations on her books which are always illustrated by Nick Sharratt. I do not have a favourite book of hers I love them all.

“Pets” a poem by Gráinne Fox

What is a pet?

Is it something you can hold or cuddle or keep you warm?

I know what the truth is.

Pets can be so much fun whether it’s a dog, cat or rabbit.

You have to take care of it feed it, clean it wash it AND especially LOVE it.

Love your pet.

I once knew an old man whose name was Jim Ryan, and he was as strong as a horse. One day I went to visit him, and he was as white as a ghost, so I pre summed he was sick. A few days later I went to visit him again, and he was awfully sick. The next day Jim had to go to hospital, because he was as sick as a dog. I went into hospital to visit him nearly every day, and nearly every day I saw him he was getting as weak as water. A week later Jim died because he was too weak to live, and that’s the story of poor old Jim Ryan.

Terryglass Arts Festival

The Terryglass Arts festival is held annually during the last week of August. There is something for everyone. During the day various workshops are held, such as clay making, silk painting, drumming, Tai chi, acrylic painting and much more. There is always a display at the Quay. Last year there was  a weaving of the Lough Derg Monster. In the school there are some other displays, the most recent idea was the crazy animals. Friday evening is usually a special occasion with music in the church. Then on Saturday  night there is  street entertainment in the square with fire jugglers and stilt walkers. Every other night there is usually music, dancing, comedians and loads of other different acts in the hall, Paddy’s and  The Derg. Sometimes there are fireworks on Saturday night. Sunday afternoon sees the street parade, where children have the opportunity to show off things made during workshops. It is great fun and craic, so you should really go and have a look!

PONIES

One day Robbin and Raindrop were running. There were ten other girls there. Raindrop fell and the other girl laughed at her. Robbin helped her up. “That is not nice,” said Raindrop! “Would you like it ?” said Robbin. “No,” said Yasmin, “I would not like it at all!” And all of them made friends. The next day the ponies went to the park. They played and played and played until Snowflake feel in the lake. Snowdrop tried to get her out but the lake was too strong and pulled her in. “The wind is too strong and will try to pull us all in! What will we do now?” they said. Because it is so windy we can fly a kite and they can hold on to it and it will pull them up! “Yes!” they said. “But where will we get a kite?” said Jade. We have a kite in our car and they got the kite and pulled Snowdrop and Snowflake out of the lake. They then went to get ice-cream and they were all happy again.

The Spooky House

Tim and Ann cycled their bikes up the hill. They saw a dark old house at the top of the hill. They left their bikes at the bottom of the steps. They saw a green lizard and a huge spider on the path. They crept up to the house and peeped in the window. Tim opened the door. Suddenly, he screamed as he saw a witch coming towards him. The children ran down the steps and jumped on their bikes and cycled home.

ATHLETIC CLUB NEWS

I have been a member of Borrisokane athletic club for the past 4 years. Many children and teenagers from Borrisokane and surrounding areas are joined the club. I have made many new friends since joining the club. John Farrell and Noreen Nevin are the trainers and they are both fully committed to the club which shows in the many competitions won at all levels. Training takes place in the Complex in Borrisokane 2 evenings a week and also on Sunday mornings. In the summer we also train at the track in Tullamore on Wednesday evenings and in the winter we train at the indoor track in Nenagh. Nenagh has the only indoor track in Munster and it is a great asset to us for our training. A lot of the indoor competitions are held at Nenagh track and the Munster Indoors are due to take place in February. I will take part in the long jump and short sprint races. I am also part of the under 11 girls relay team and we won many competitions throughout last year. We also train cross-country and this is a tough one as we run longer distance in all kinds of weather conditions. These competitions are run over the winter months and our relay team finished 2nd in the county this year. The Community Games are another enjoyable event and our under 15 girls relay team won gold in Monsey last year. The club are very proud of this achievement. I enjoy athletics very much not only when I win but because taking part and being part of a team is such good fun.

School Sailing :Once a week on a Tuesday after school 17 pupils from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes go sailing.  A bus takes us from the school to the sailing club in Dromineer.   When we arrive at the club we quickly get changed in to our wetsuits and lifejackets, rig the boats.  We sail Laser Picos which are yellow boats with blue sails.  Three children go in each boat.  The instructor goes in a rescue boat and helps us.  After sailing for a bit we practice capsizing.  At the end we are allowed to jump off the piers and go swimming.  After getting changed we get a hot drink and then get on the bus and go home.  It is really fun to go sailing with my friends.

Healthy Eating PolicyWe have a new healthy eating policy in school. It means you have to bring healthy food and you are not allowed to bring biscuits, crisps or sweets. It felt really strange in the beginning because I used to look forward to look forward to having something nice in my lunch but now I am used to it and I think it encourages us not to eat so many sweet things.By Heather Slattery

Brasil vArgentina:The stadium was packed with Brazil and Argentina fans. When the Argentinean Team came out there was booing from the Brazil fans which drowned out the roars of theArgentinian fans. When the Brazil fans came out there was a huge roar over the stadium from the fans. The match started with Brazil getting tip-off.  The first goal by Elano from Brazil. It was a super goal in the bottom right hand corner. Then Brazilian fans started “the Mexican wave” it went allaround the stadium. The second goal came from Elano again. I was disappointed that Ronaldinho did not play as he is my favourite player. During the second half there were no goals until the 73rd minute. Kaka scored a brilliant goal having rounded 5 defenders and past the keeper. The atmosphere was electric. When the final whistle blew it was three goals to nil.  It was a day I will remember for the rest of my life. By Emmet Dwyer
